Cowley AEC team wins preliminary tournament

Hosting a prelimary tournament Saturday in Arkansas City, the Cowley College AEC (Academic Excellence Challenge) team went 5-0 to win the tournament.

“I was excited for them,” Cowley mathematics instructor/AEC coach Greg Nichols said. “We had a couple of close matches but were able to pull them out.”

Cowley’s winning squad consisted of Brett Albright, Steven Arebalo, Matt Beach, and Chansi Long.

Cowley split its team to fill a spot for round robin purposes. The combo team was made up of Cowley’s Derek Bowman, Adam Long, and members from other teams. The combo team went 1-4 but lost two games by one question.

Cowley faired well as individuals as Matt Beach finished third, Adam Long tied for fourth and Brett Albright ended in ninth place.

“We have got a diverse team that knows a lot of areas,” Nichols said.

Other schools at the tournament were, Cloud County, Neosho County, Highland, and Kansas City Community College.

Cowley’s AEC team will now prepare for the region tournament, which will be held March 31 at Neosho County Community College. If Cowley finishes among the top-two schools at the region tournament they will receive a bye into the finals of the state tournament held April 27-28 at Colby Community College.
“I anticipate us doing well at regionals,” Nichols said.
