College’s Institute of Lifetime Learning offering fall classes
Fall enrollment for classes in the Institute of Lifetime Learning at Cowley College is scheduled from 1-4 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Earle N. Wright Community Room inside the Brown Center on Cowley’s Arkansas City campus.
The Institute offers classes for women and men age 50 and over. It is a way for them to continue their education and have fun while doing it. Fees for classes and trips are paid at enrollment. There is a $5 registration fee and a fee of $2 per class. Some classes have additional costs. Enrollment by telephone will be accepted after Aug. 24.
Participants are asked to bring mailing labels to use on the enrollment form and signup sheets.
The Institute of Lifetime Learning’s office is inside the Webb-Brown Academic Center, located at Third Street and Washington Avenue. Margaret Neal, coordinator, is located on the second floor, Room 201. There is an elevator in the building.
The popular AARP 55 Alive Driver Safety course is being taught in Arkansas City. The class will be held from 1-5 p.m. Oct. 5 and 6 in Room 208 of the Webb-Brown Academic Center in Arkansas City. Ed Hanna, long-time driver education instructor, will teach both classes.
The Tiger Coffee Club is being offered Oct. 4 and Nov. 1 at the Patrick J. McAtee Dining Center. This provides participants a chance to visit with the college’s administrators and staff.
A Holiday Extravaganza will be held Dec. 12 from 1:30-4 p.m. in the Earle N. Wright Community Room inside the Brown Center. The event will consist of a visit from Santa, holiday music, food and more. The cost is $5.
An Alaska cruise is being offered July 25 through Aug. 1, 2007. The cruise consists of a seven-day Northbound Glacier Route with ports of calls to Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, and Sitka.
The cost of the cruise ranges from $1,921 to $2,941 per person. The price includes cruise passage, port taxes, federal taxes, and roundtrip airfare from Wichita.
Four educational trips are planned throughout the fall, including one to Tulsa, Okla., one to Abilene, one to Dexter, and one to Wichita.

Monday, Sept. 18, Abilene. Historic Abilene will be the destination for the first trip. The trip will include the Visitors’ Center, Museum, Library, Chapel, and Family Home at the Eisenhower Center. The group will have lunch at the historic Kirby House Restaurant. The afternoon will include a ride on the Abilene Smoky Valley Railroad and a stop at the Russell Stover Candy Outlet. Depart at 7 a.m. and return by 7 p.m.. Cost is $40 and includes lunch.
Friday, Oct. 20, Dexter. This trip will include stops at the Stone Barn Mercantile, candy store, and other places of interest in the area. There will also be an opportunity to pick pumpkins at the Pumpkin Patch and visit the Corn Maze. The group will have lunch at The Gathering Place. Depart at 9:30 a.m. and return by 4 p.m. Cost is $20 and includes lunch.
Monday, Nov. 6, Tulsa, Okla. This trip will feature a tour of the Blue Bell Creamery and the Oklahoma Aquarium. The Aquarium has eight major galleries with more than 4,000 creatures from the world’s waters. The group will have lunch at the Incredible Pizza Company. Depart at 7 a.m. and return by 7 p.m.. Cost is $35 and includes lunch.
Thursday, Dec. 14, Wichita. The last trip for the semester will be to the Crown Uptown Dinner Theater in Wichita. After a buffet lunch, the group will enjoy the popular holiday musical comedy, “Dreamin’ of a White Christmas”. Depart at 10 a.m. and return by 5 p.m. Cost is $35 and includes lunch and show.
