Cowley AEC team places second at Snowbowl tournament
Going up against some strong competition, the Cowley College AEC (Academic Excellence Challenge) team placed second Saturday in the Snowbowl tournament held in Hutchinson.
The eight-team tournament was the first of the season for Cowley’s AEC team.
“We seemed to struggle early as we only have one returning member from last year’s team, but the team fought back in the playoffs to unseed a very good Cloud team (110-90) and cruise past Highland (120-90) to meet a solid Hutchinson team in the finals,” Cowley mathematics instructor/AEC coach Greg Nichols said. “I was ecstatic to finish second with three brand new people on the team. We hit our peak at the right time.”
Cowley had two individuals place in the top-10 individually as sophomores Steven Arebalo placed ninth and Matt Beach placed 10th. Other members of the squad are sophomores Derek Bowman and Chansi Long.
The tournament consisted of 18 question rounds, with each question being worth 10 points. Bonus questions were asked with a value of up to 30 points.
AEC will compete at three to four tournaments in the spring and will host a tournament in Arkansas City. The team will next compete at the National Academic Quiz Qualifier held at Cloud County Community College on Feb. 10.
