Cowley AEC team does well at regional competition
Facing off against five other Kansas Community College’s at the
Academic Excellence Challenge West Regional this past weekend in Garden
City, the Cowley AEC team finished in a tie for third.
The team picked up wins over Garden City and Dodge City, and tied Pratt. They also lost to Cloud County and suffered a close defeat against another Garden City team.
“In discussing the meet with the students, they felt as if they were right there with most of the games,” Cowley mathematics instructor/AEC coach Greg Nichols said.
The students were beat to the buzzer a few times or the outcome might have been different in its loss to Garden City.
“Those things will happen during the competition and we must work on being faster on the draw so to speak,” Nichols said.
Cowley’s Jake Fletcher fared well at the regional as he placed second individually. Other team members are, Jamie Nichols, Richard Gould, Joshua Arsenault, and Elizabeth Smith.
The team has had a relative amount of success this season as they went 7-1 in Hutchinson and 2-2-1 in Garden City in earlier competitions.
“We are competitive in nearly every match and have had an opportunity to win at all of the meets,” Nichols said. “Our team is very smart and will have the opportunity to have success in AEC, if we learn to just answer and not hesitate when we think we have an idea of what the answer is.”
The Cowley AEC team will now prepare for the state competition April 24-25, which will be held at Kansas State at Salina.
