Cowley to conduct Multidisciplinary Training course on April 22
Cowley College Director of Journalism, Meg Smith, will have students in her Violence
in the Media course work with students in the college’s Allied Health
and Theatre Department’s during a joint training session on April 22.
The Multidisciplinary Training course (paramedic, media, and theatre) will be held from 2-5 p.m. at Cowley College’s Allied Health Center in Winfield.
This training is based on the Dart Center of Seattle trauma training and is combined with the mass casualty training for the EMTs. Cowley College Lead MICT instructor Cindy Branscum, Theatre Director Scott MacLaughlin, along with Director of Communications Adam Borth, and Smith, have been working on this for the past few semesters.
“This is the first time I have tried this with so many involved, but Cindy (Branscum) has experience with the mass casualty training so I am relying on her to help create a realistic scene,” Smith said. “Scott (MacLaughlin) is providing actors who will have medical conditions for the EMTs to diagnose and information the reporters will need to gain from interviewing them.”
Smith said they are planning to have an ambulance, paramedic van, a fire truck and possibly a police car at the scene as well as numerous people to create the crowd scene.
Borth will be filming the Multidisciplinary Training course so the footage can be reviewed in Smith’s Violence in the Media course.
