Spring concerts approaching at Cowley

With the beauty of spring on display, several talented musical groups at Cowley College are preparing to entertain audiences with their spring concerts.

Students in Cowley College’s music department are working hard in preparation of the concerts. The first performance will feature the Cowley College Singers and Jazz Band on Tuesday, April 27 at 7 p.m. in the Robert Brown Theatre.

That concert will be followed by the Cowley Concert Choir and Concert Band Spring Concert, which will be held Tuesday, May 4 at 7 p.m. in the Robert Brown Theatre.

There is no cost to attend the concerts.

The Cowley College Singers and Cowley Concert Choir will perform under the direction of vocal music director, Connie Donatelli. While, the Jazz Band and Concert Band are led by instrumental music director, Josh Fleig.

The CC Singers recently performed at the South Central POISE Users’ Group’s 29th Annual Conference held in Tulsa, OK on Tuesday. The group received a standing ovation at the conclusion of their performance.

“It was fun for us to represent Cowley College at a big event, we got a great response,’ Donatelli said.

They will next perform at the Good Sam Campers Club held at the Winfield Fairgrounds on Saturday in advance of its concert with the Jazz Band on April 27.

After performing only half of the Disney show in the fall, the CC Singers will perform the full Disney show on April 27.

“I am excited to show the new section that has been added to it,” Donatelli said.

The Jazz Band will perform six songs with a mix of swing and Latin based charts. Among the songs performed will be a couple of sambas.

“I feel the students are playing better than ever,” Fleig said. “This is about the time when things really start clicking.”

Featured soloists during the Jazz Band concert will be, Jeremiah Johnson and Caleb Johnston on guitar, Bert Hutson on tenor saxophone, Kelley Reynolds on trumpet, as well as a solo by alto player Dan Byers.

Along with the Jazz Band, the Guitar Ensemble will also perform two jazz arrangements and a piece by Johann Sebastian Bach. One of the jazz arrangements titled “Grand View” was written by Fleig, who used his first experience in the Pacific Ocean as inspiration for the song.

Fleig will accompany the Guitar Ensemble on bass guitar.

“I am real excited about this group,” Fleig said.

On May 4, the Concert Choir will perform the Opera La Traviata by Verdi.

Along with an evening of Opera choruses, the concert will also feature two soloists, with Cowley alumnus Lindsay Ramirez serving as a soprano soloist, and Douglass High School director of vocal music, Brian Stranghoner, serving as tenor soloist. The Concert Choir will join Ramirez and Stranghoner in a chorus.

“The kids have really taken to the Opera choruses,” Donatelli said.

Following the CC Singers performance on April 27, the group will set out on its annual spring tour, which will take place April 29-May 1. The CC Singers will perform in Salina on April 29, with high school students from Salina Central, Salina South, and Salina Sacred Heart in attendance.

The group will then perform at Rock Creek High School in Westmoreland, before heading out for a tour of Kansas State University’s Theatre Department, which will include a theatre production.

The tour will conclude with the group having an opportunity to see the touring production of Legally Blonde in Omaha, NE.
