Writers' Corner packs the house for final performance
Creative Claws hosted its final Writers' Corner of the year on Thursday
at Brown's in downtown Arkansas City to a packed house of over 60 people.
Marlys Cervantes, club sponsor, was delighted with the participation:
"We had 26 presenters of original works. It was the best night yet,” Cervantes said. “Several were first-time presenters, there were two Cowley alums, and even a few from Cowley staff and faculty. Considering the fact that we first began in 2006 with only eight presenters, you can see how the program has grown."
Several graduating students presented for their last time while students at Cowley, and many expressed their appreciation of both Cowley and the writing program. Joanna Carson, club president, mentioned how lucky the students at Cowley are to have this outlet for their works, noting that many larger colleges don't offer this type of club and ongoing activity with their writing programs.
"We started small, only a few years ago, and now we not only have the active club, but several writing and literature courses and a Creative Writing degree,” Cervantes said. “The interest is obviously there."
The public is invited to a reception of student works, Life: Through Words and Lens, which will be held in the Earle N. Wright Community Room on Thursday, May 6, from 6-7:30 p.m.
