Cowley College to hold Commencement on May 8
A total of 612 students will be candidates for graduation Saturday, May
8 when Cowley College holds its 87th Commencement exercises.
The Commencement exercises will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8 inside W.S. Scott Auditorium. A reception for graduates, family members and friends will be held immediately following the ceremony in the Earle N. Wright Community Room inside the Brown Center.
Two hundred and forty three of the students are expected to participate in the Commencement ceremony. Along with the conferring of degrees, college alumnus Mildred Johnston will be presented with this year’s Outstanding Tiger Alumnus Award. Johnston is a 1947 graduate of Arkansas City Junior College.
The featured speaker is Cowley College Natural Science Department instructor Scott Layton, who also serves as the college’s Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence and Student Learning, and was the recipient of the Paul Stirnaman Memorial Award for Teaching Excellence in 2008.
Members of Cowley’s faculty also will be recognized, including Greg Nichols, who was presented the 2009 Paul Stirnaman Award and along with David Hays, will be honored later this month as Excellence Award recipients at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in Austin, Texas.
Members of Cowley’s Student Government Association also will address the class. Samantha Thieme, a sophomore elementary education major from Zenda, served as SGA president during the 2009-2010 academic year. While, Jeff Wejman, a sophomore psychology major from Derby, served as SGA vice president.
Students listed in the official Commencement program on Saturday, May 8 are candidates for the associate of arts degree, the associate degree of applied science, the associate degree of general studies, the associate degree of science, or the college certificate.
The students include summer 2009 graduates, December 2009 graduates, and May 2010 graduates. Students who graduated last summer and last December have received their diplomas. May 2010 graduates will receive their diplomas in June.
The Sid Regnier Bookstore at 207 W. Fifth Ave. will be open until 11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 8.
