Students get acquainted at Theatre Camp

theatre campServing as a way for incoming Theatre Scholarship students at Cowley College to learn about the program as well as its returning sophomores, Director of Theatre and Theatrical Services Scott MacLaughlin helped conduct the school’s fifth annual Theatre Camp Wednesday and Thursday in the Brown Center.

The camp consists of 20 incoming freshmen that will be on scholarship in the fall, and nine returning sophomores. Joining MacLaughlin in working the Theatre Camp were, dance instructor Jennifer Blatchford, technical director of theatre Jamison Rhoads, and vice president of student affairs Sue Saia.

“This helps the freshman learn what to expect when they come into the program and helps get them on the same page with the returning sophomores,” MacLaughlin said.

The students will take part in activities and initiative type games. After hearing about the expectations of the camp and taking part in a few games, the students will then board a bus for Kansas City’s American Heartland Theatre, where they will see Tony Award-winning The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on Wednesday night.

Following the performance the students will head back to Arkansas City to stay the night in Cowley College’s Oscar Kimmell Dormitory.

The final day of the camp will consist of breakfast, games, initiatives and challenges, a sophomore guided tour, and a film of highlights of the past year’s theatre events.

Students that received Theatre Scholarships for the fall of 2010 and are taking part in the Theatre camp are: Peter Fairchild, Dylan Muilenburg, Octavio Matamoros, Jackson Curtright, Tim Kennedy, Rachel Curtiss, Brianna Herndon, Jessica Hayden, Tracey Marr, Jillian Turner, Paige Givens, Krista Whittemore, Gabby Gerdau, Kalon Steinaway, Jilysa Daniel, Beth Pudden, Shaelynn French, Jade Sparks, Brandy McFall, Rebecca Munoz, and Anne Harmon.
