Cowley College Clothing Drive helps families of the community

Clothing Drive 2009Cowley College Kansas Education Association Student Members Aubrey Lyman, Wrylie Finkle and Samantha Thieme, with the assistance of ACES and Social Science students, collected slightly used and new clothing for families of the community.

Clothing donations were collected over the course of six weeks with a distribution event held Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Flyers and emails were sent to local schools informing them that families could pick up any clothing items needed for the coming winter months, no questions asked. Community members arrived in the parking lot at about 9 a.m. to find a place in the line which formed in anticipation of the 10 a.m. start time.

Cowley Education Majors would like to thank all those who donated and a special thank you will be extended to Social Science Department Chair, Todd Shepherd, and his father, Lemoin, for all their efforts. Upon hearing about the event, Shepherd phoned his local church members and was able to deliver a pick-up load of items along with a cash donation from Missouri.

Julie Rhoads, elementary education instructor at Cowley College, was in charge of the event.

It is uncertain how many articles were donated as there were too many to count. It took seven volunteers more than one hour to move boxes and bags of clothing, shoes, coats and accessories from the basement of the Brown Center into the college’s Earle N. Wright Community Room. Another seven and a half hours was spent folding and placing items on 40 tables throughout the community room on Friday.

By 4 p.m. Saturday only two small boxes of children’s clothing remained. Those will be donated to local school “clothing closets.” The adult clothing will be distributed to other local organizations over the course of the next few weeks. The first items to go were pants, shoes, coats and hats/gloves. While the distribution was a success, more children’s shoes and pants could have been distributed. This will be something to consider when preparing for future clothing drives (so start saving those items now).

At this time there are no specifics on a future clothing drive as the group is focusing on their next fundraising effort, Cowley’s Best Dance Crew.

Cowley students can put together a crew of 3 to 12 members and compete for prizes. Registration for the competition will end November 20 and registration forms are available in the Social Science Department Office. The competition will take place December 1 at 7 p.m.  inside the Robert Brown Theatre. The cost to attend the event is $2, with the funds raised being used toward an “Out Reach to Teach” project for one of the local schools. Project details are yet to be determined as the funds will drive the possibilities, so a sell-out is essential.
