Dance competition raises funds for local elementary school
Five dance crews competed for the title of Cowley's Best Dance Crew Tuesday
evening in the Robert Brown Theatre.
More than 100 people attended the event, which was sponsored by KNEA-SP (Kansas National Education Association Student Program at Cowley College). Shawn Wheat from KSOK Radio and Cowley assistant basketball coach Anthony Shavies served as emcees.
Tickets sales from the event will go to help purchase needed items for Francis Willard Elementary School. A recent meeting between KNEA-SP members and the local school produced a list of items, which included soccer balls, kick balls and basketballs for each classroom to use at recess. Additional items included children's literature for classroom libraries, tricycles for the Pre-K program and murals to be painted on hallway walls. KNEA-SP will apply for a CLASS Grant from the National Education Association as well.
The Senior National Champions from Ark City Dance Studio opened the event with a special guest performance and 2009 Puttin' On the Hits winners, Shaelynn French and Ian Sutton, closed the event with their performance of "My Philosophy".
CTS crew members LaMonica Johnson, Falisha Scott, Tiffany Wilcox and DeAge'a Banks earned the title of Cowley's Best Dance Crew. Taking first-runner up was the Dance Rejects made up of Erin May, Shaelynn French and Alyson Walker. Second-runner up went to the Rockits.
Each of these dance crews will have a picture of the crew posted in the Social Science Display case with the first and second place crews receiving gift cards from Wal-Mart.
