AEC teams have strong showing at Snow Bowl
Taking part in the Snow Bowl National Academic Quiz Tournament held Saturday,
Dec. 5 in Hutchinson, the “Cowley Tiger” Academic Excellence
Challenge Team placed third out of 11 teams.
Cowley College had a second team take part in the competition and place fifth.
“I was impressed with both teams’ efforts,” Cowley AEC coach Greg Nichols said. “We have some new players to the AEC format this year and this was the first event for three of our players and only the second event for all but two of our players.”
The format consisted of four round robin matches to place in the seeded two-pool tournament. Cowley “A” lost the first round of bracket play before winning two matches, while the “Cowley Tiger” team won its first game, lost the second, then won the third game of the bracket to place third.
Jake Fletcher led the “Cowley Tiger” team by answering a tournament high 23 tossup questions. Fletcher placed second individually due to a bye round for the eventual individual high scorer.
“Again I am pleased with his competitiveness and desire to excel in this arena,” Nichols said.
Richard Gould anchored the Cowley “A” team that ended up placing fifth in the tournament. Gould placed 11th out of 42 competitors.
“This group was comprised of mostly new players who were at their first or second event,” Nichols said. “Once the round robin play concluded, they performed well by finishing with two wins to take fifth place in the tournament.”
The Garden City “A” team placed first at the Snow Bowl, while Coffeyville finished second.
The Cowley AEC Team practices in Galle-Johnson Room 302 each Monday at 2:30 p.m.
