Close to 1,500 people attend Children's Theatre production of Rapunzel

RapunzelArea school children, along with members of the community, were treated to three Children’s Theatre performances of “Rapunzel” by Karen Boettcher-Tate, which was put on by Cowley College’s Act One drama club on Monday and Tuesday.
Close to 1,500 people attended the three performances of “Rapunzel”.
“It was a good combination of work done by our students and a wonderfully, well written script, provided by Pioneer Drama Services,” said director of theatre Scott MacLaughlin. “This may have been one of the best student productions we have ever done.”

Prior to the performances, the students conducted a dress rehearsal on Sunday night with members of MOSAIC in Winfield in attendance. MOSAIC serves people with developmental disabilities.
“This was a great way for us to do a show for their staff and clients,” MacLaughlin said. “It was also a great way for our students to have a pre-show performance with an audience.”

On Monday, the students performed in front of roughly 500 children from USD 470 and surrounding schools.

On Tuesday, the students gave an afternoon performance to an audience of 650 school children. Schools represented at the two afternoon performances were, Adams, C-4, Frances Willard, Jefferson, Sacred Heart, IXL, Roosevelt, Cedar Vale elementary, Newkirk (OK) elementary, and First Lutheran in Ponca City, OK.
Close to 300 people attended the final performance, which was open to the public on Tuesday evening.

“Many of the audience members commented on how much they enjoyed it,” MacLaughlin said. “The kids loved it and were fascinated by it.”

Cowley College sophomore Dange’ Sanders student directed the performances.
“She did a wonderful job,” MacLaughlin said. “It is a great learning experience for a student to be put in a director’s shoes.”

The show was filled with plenty of action and fresh, hysterical characters. The show gave a new twist to an old story and a gentle message about the nature of beauty.
