TMU presents The Sounds of Silence: An open contest for film makers
Temporal Mechanics Union has often performed composed and improvisational scores to silent films, most notably the classics The Adventures of Prince Achmed and The Lost World. Now, the ensemble is seeking a new silent film as the inspiration for an original composition. The winning entry in The Sounds of Silence filmmaking contest will be premiered at the next Temporal Mechanics Union concert with an original score performed live by the ensemble.
The contest is open to all film makers, regardless of previous experience. Film makers may work as individuals or as production teams. The film may be no more than 20 minutes in length and must be silent. Minimal dialog is permitted, but the overall sound track of the film should be “blank”. The film may be of any genre, of any subject matter. Experimental and abstract works are particularly encouraged.
Entries must be submitted as DVDs. Films not submitted as finished DVDs will not be considered. Film makers may submit up to three different entries. The deadline for all entries is 5 p.m. March 31. Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than March 31.
The members of TMU will select a winner from all entries based on originality and creativity, visual appeal, technical competence and musical possibilities presented by the film. The winning film will be featured on the program of the ensemble’s May 5 concert, complete with an original score created by TMU specifically for the winning entry. The winning film maker(s) will also receive additional prizes, including TMU logo merchandise and passes to local cinemas. All intellectual property rights to the film will remain with the makers, but film makers must agree to unlimited performance rights for TMU.
