Cowley Awareness Activity Team concludes successful A New Year, A New You" event
Each month Cowley Awareness Activity Team, otherwise known as CAAT, has a theme that they center its monthly activities on, and for January the theme was for a healthier you. "A New Year, A New You" was an ongoing event that started when students came back from winter break and wrapped up at Thursday night’s Homecoming dance.
Cowley College students Clint Meyer, Cassie Dvorak, and Andrea Sweetwood were in charge of planning and putting on the events for the month. The group wanted to give students more incentive to go work out at the Ben Cleveland Wellness Center, or go swim at the indoor pool at Arkansas City High School, or take in intramural sports activities.
The CAAT students came up with a contest in which students who signed up to take part could earn a chance to win an IPod Nano given away at the Homecoming dance. When students signed up for the contest they were given a Cowley CAAT water bottle, and also one entry in to the raffle.
To gain additional entries into the raffle, each time a student logged in and worked out at the wellness center they gained another raffle ticket. Same thing if they logged in and swam at the ACHS pool, and also if they took part in an intramural sports activity.
More than 100 Cowley College students signed up to take part in the event. The contest started with the first day of classes this spring, and ended on January 31.
“The event went really well, we had a lot of people participate in it,” CAAT member Clint Meyer said.
Next month the Cowley Awareness Activity Team is putting on sexual awareness events with the monthly theme being "Sex!!! Be Safe, Be Smart". Several activities are planned including an information table in the Patrick J. McAtee Dining Center, a display case in Galle Johnson Hall, and an educational and fun event "Sex Talks and Blow Pops" which will be held on Feb. 16 in the Earle N. Wright Community Room.
Meyer said the Cowley Awareness Activity Team tries to promote a healthy lifestyle and would like to see increased student participation in the group’s events. Also, CAAT members can serve as peer mentors and be there for students to talk to if they need a helping hand.
