Cowleys theatre/music departments to perform spring musical Lucky Stiff March 10-12

Looking to do a fun show with a contemporary sound, the Cowley College theatre and music departments decided to do “Lucky Stiff” as its spring musical. The musical will be performed at 7:30 p.m. March 10-12 inside the Robert Brown Theatre.

“Lucky Stiff” was the first collaboration for the team of Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music). The show is based on the 1983 novel The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo by Michael Butterworth. It was created and performed at Playwrights Horizons off-Broadway in 1988, and won the Richard Rodgers Award for that year.

According to Cowley College director of theatre, Scott MacLaughlin, the funny, fast paced show, is similar to the movie Weekend at Bernie’s.

“It is a witty and fun story and the kids have been great to work with,” MacLaughlin said. “We wanted to do something new and Connie (Donatelli) and I have always enjoyed the music to it.”

The story centers on Harry Witherspoon, an unassuming English shoe salesman, who lives an uneventful life in East Grinstead, England. His life takes a dramatic turn when he learns that his uncle Anthony, a casino manager from Atlantic City, has been killed by his blind lover. Harry learns that he stands to inherit $6,000,000 from his uncle – but only if he agrees to take his Uncle’s corpse on a trip to Monte Carlo. Otherwise, the money will all go to his uncle’s favorite charity, the Universal Dog Home of Brooklyn. In a quest to gain his uncle’s inheritance, Harry sets out to fulfill Anthony’s dying wish. However, in Monte Carlo, he meets a host of quirky characters who are also in hot pursuit of his uncle’s money.

There are 16 cast members and more than 30 individuals involved with the production of the musical.
“I think it is a hilarious show and hope people like it as much as I do,” MacLaughlin said.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 620-441-5570.
