Concert Band shares the stage at Friends University
Every spring semester Dr. John Taylor, professor of music and director of instrumental studies and music education at Friends University, invites an area concert band to share a concert. This year Dr. Taylor invited the Cowley College Concert Band because of the growing reputation of Cowley’s instrumental music program.
Monday night’s concert was held in Sebits Auditorium on the Friends University campus in Wichita.
Josh Fleig, director of instrumental music at Cowley College, said he was honored his group was invited to perform at Friends University and to share the stage with such a well established ensemble.
“Friends has been known for many years for their outstanding music department,” Fleig said. “Their commitment to excellence is very inspiring. Dr. Taylor and everyone at Friends have been so kind and supportive of what we are trying to do here at Cowley.”
The Cowley Concert Band opened Monday night’s performance with six pieces, five of which they performed at their fall concert in the Robert Brown Theatre on the Cowley College campus in Arkansas City. The sixth piece featured Cowley sophomore Daniel Byers as a soloist on alto saxophone.
“I am incredibly proud of Monday night’s performance,” Fleig said. “We have really made some great strides in the instrumental music program. This invitation to perform at Friends is validation of all of our efforts over the past few years.”
