Cowley instructors attend Scholastic Art Awards exhibition in Wichita

Looking to inform high school students of the opportunities and scholarships offered at Cowley College, art instructors Mike Fell and Mark Flickinger, along with director of Journalism, Meg Smith, attended the Scholastic Art Awards exhibition held Sunday at The Wichita Center for the Arts.

The Scholastic Art Awards exhibition showcases artwork from students in high school and middle school around the state of Kansas. Awards consisted of Gold Key, Silver Key, or Honorable Mention recognition.
Following the conclusion of the awards ceremony, Cowley’s instructors offered full-tuition scholarships to 24 of the award winners.

Fell believes attending the event over the past three to four years has been beneficial for the school.
“We look at it as a way of getting the college’s name out there to teachers and students that attend the awards ceremony,” Fell said. “We have had fair success in attracting students to come down and check out Cowley and decide to go to school here.”

Awards were presented in the following categories: Ceramics & Glass, Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography, Film Animation, Digital Art, and Mixed Media. Artwork that was in the exhibition will be on display at the Wichita Center for the Arts through March 6.

All high school students are invited to enjoy a day of mass media and performing and fine arts at Cowley College on March 2 as the school will hold its annual Fine Arts Day. Students will have an opportunity to compete for scholarships, cash vouchers, and awards.

Along with the competitions, students will enjoy a day of performing and visual art.

“This allows students that did not get into the Scholastic Art Award exhibition a chance to compete and show their work,” Fell said.
