Students showcase their talents at Cowleys Fine Arts Day

Fine Arts Day

Enjoying a day of the performing and fine arts at Cowley College, 160 high school students from Kansas and Oklahoma registered to take part in the school’s Fine Arts Day held Wednesday on the Arkansas City campus.

Through the course of Fine Arts Day, students from 25 high schools had a chance to audition and/or share portfolios of their artwork. Student artwork was displayed and prizes were given in several different categories. Prizes awarded included scholarships and cash prizes.

Students also had the opportunity to see Cowley’s different art programs in action, as there were performances by Cowley’s instrumental ensemble, the Cowley College Singers, the cast of the upcoming spring musical “Lucky Stiff”, and members of Cowley’s dance class. There were also piano performances, poetry reading, a performance by Travis Truax, a slide show put together by the journalism, communication, and graphic design programs, and a film by art/design. Students also had a chance to meet with faculty, talk with current students, and take a tour of the campus.

Cowley College Humanities Department Chair, Marlys Cervantes, had an opportunity to visit with many of the students, parents and teachers that attended Fine Arts Day, and said the individuals came away impressed with the event and were excited about coming to school at Cowley.

“It was a tremendous Fine Arts Day,” Cervantes said. “Ben (Schears), Rachelle (Cobble, and the admissions staff rocked. They are the reason things went so smoothly and allowed us to concentrate on the program side of things. I also appreciate the work of Mike Fell in getting everything organized.”

Auditions were held for broadcast journalism, dance, vocal music, instrumental music, theatre, and piano scholarships. While, Creative Writing, Graphic Design, and Prodigy Art Portfolio interviews were conducted.

This was the sixth year Cowley has held Fine Arts Day.

“I feel that once again Cowley Fine Arts students and staff presented a high energy event which showcased the creative opportunities available at Cowley,” Cowley art instructor Mike Fell said. “It is evident that students interested in pursuing the arts can find what they are looking for at Cowley.”

An awards ceremony capped the day. There were 31 Prodigy Art Award winners named and four winners in the Best of Show. Creative Writing Prodigy Awards were also handed out.

“The students work was very impressive,” Cervantes said. “We have got some talented incoming students that really want to be here.”
