Education majors take part in Super Star Family Fun Night
Working with Frances Willard Elementary School in Arkansas City,
Cowley College education majors read picture books and facilitated science
activities for students in grades pre-Kindergarten through fifth grade
during Frances Willard’s Super Star Family Fun Night event held
on Monday.
Approximately 400 parents and students attended the event. The science
activities coordinated with children’s picture books which had
been read to each classroom throughout the day by education majors from
the Foundations of Education and Introduction to Teaching course.
“The objective was to provide parents an opportunity to see that reading
a book can go beyond the traditional idea of a bedtime story and include fun,
hands-on activities for the whole family,” Julie Rhoads, Cowley College
director of education and service learning said.
The education majors picked the book they read to the students and received
input on the science activities they implemented with the students.
Rhoads thought the event was beneficial not only to the elementary students
but also to the education majors.
“When students become actively involved in concepts covered in children’s
literature, their reading skills are better developed,” Rhoads said.
As part of the Super Star Family Fun Night, a dinner was held to celebrate
the students taking the state assessments.
