Sparks one of 24 contestants for Miss Kansas 2011
As the winner of the Miss Walnut Valley Pageant in November, Cowley College
sophomore Jade Sparks is preparing for the Miss Kansas pageant, which
will be held June 11 in Pratt, KS.
Sparks is one of 24 contestants that will be vying for the honor of Miss Kansas and a chance to represent the state in the Miss American pageant. Sparks’ platform is Jodi’s Voice-Stalking Awareness. She plans to perform a jazz dance routine during the talent portion of the event.
Prior to the Miss Walnut Valley pageant, Sparks was a newcomer to pageant competitions. So, the past four months have been a bit of a learning experience for Sparks in terms of the pageant scene.
“This has been a new and exciting opportunity for me,” Sparks said. “Dancing in the talent portion will make me feel more in my element.”
Sparks teaches dance classes at Ark City Dance and has been dancing for the past 13 years. Along with dancing, she enjoys singing and acting. She had a role in Cowley College’s production of “Crazy for You” as a junior at ACHS and fell in love with music-theatre. She recently shined in the role of Dominique Du Monaco in Cowley College’s spring musical “Lucky Stiff”.
Along with being only one of four Cowley College students on scholarship for Jennifer Blatchford’s dance program, she is also a student ambassador, a secretary for Act One, a member of the CC Singers and Concert Choir and was the runner-up in the voting for Queen Alalah LXXIX.
Phases of the competition will include talent, swimwear, eveningwear, interview, and on-stage questions.
After Cowley, Sparks plans to attend Emporia State University on a Theatre Scholarship.
Kansas has won the Miss America crown on three occasions.
