Cowley to play host to Art Majors Show and Piano Studio Recital on Sunday
Combining efforts, Cowley College’s piano and art departments will host an Art Majors Show and Piano Studio Recital this Sunday inside the Brown Center.
This year’s Art Majors Show will be an exhibit of artwork created by this year’s graduating sophomores during their time at Cowley. There will be displayed various art media created in drawing, painting, design ceramics and sculpture classes. Some of the artwork will be for sale. The opening reception will be held Sunday from 2-4:30 p.m. inside the Earle N. Wright Community Room.
The artwork will be displayed through May 9. The following sophomores will have works displayed in the show: Michael Bowling, Maribel Ramirez, Jessica Vega, Caitlin Bowman, Talia Bowman-Bekemeyer, and Zane May.
The Piano Studio Recital will take place Sunday at 2:30 p.m. inside the Robert Brown Theatre and is free and open to the public.
The piano students will perform pieces that they have been working on the past academic year. The recital will feature different composers ranging from Bach, Beethoven to Bartok, spanning the different periods in music history. Most of the students on this recital are not music majors and just wanted to polish their piano skills. In preparation for this recital, they participated in the Walnut Valley Music Teachers Association Spring Festival and also played at the performance class at Southwestern College.
“The recital is the highlight of their piano study for the year,” Dr. Gloria Tham, piano instructor said. “As their teacher, I am more than excited to see them perform. I am very pleased with how much they have grown in their technical, musical and performance skills this year. I hope that they are rewarded by this recital experience.”
Cowley students will also be joined by Danielle Anderson of Wellington High School, the recipient for the Piano Activity Scholarship for 2011-2012.
“We are very excited to have Danielle be a part of our piano program and feature her as our guest performer in this recital,” Dr. Tham said.
The recital will feature performances by the following students: Will Austin, Anne Bloyer, Aaron Brooks, Melisa Coberley, Hanah Dillard, Valerie Monteith, Asa Muntz, and Kelley Reynolds.
A reception will be held in the Earle N. Wright Community Room following the Piano Studio Recital.
