Cowley College to hold Commencement on May 7

 

A total of 647 students will be candidates for graduation Saturday, May 7 when Cowley College holds its 88th Commencement exercises.

The Commencement exercises will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7 inside W.S. Scott Auditorium. A reception for graduates, family members and friends will be held immediately following the ceremony in the Earle N. Wright Community Room inside the Brown Center.

Two hundred and forty one of the students are expected to participate in the Commencement ceremony. Along with the conferring of degrees, college alumnus Dr. Kermit McMurry will be presented with this year’s Outstanding Tiger Alumnus Award. Dr. McMurry is a 1965 graduate of Arkansas City Junior College.

The featured speaker is Amy McWhirt, Cowley College’s Director of Academic Preparation for the  Humanities Department, who also serves as the college’s Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence and Student Learning, and is a 2011 NISOD Excellence Award recipient.

Members of Cowley’s faculty also will be recognized, including Karolee Weller, who was presented the 2010 Paul Stirnaman Award. Nondestructive Testing instructor Joe Clasen will join McWhirt in being honored later this month as Excellence Award recipients at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in Austin, Texas.

Members of Cowley’s Student Senate will address the class. Erin Griffiths, a sophomore business administration major from Winfield, served as Student Senate president during the 2010-2011 academic year. While, Devon Tracy, a sophomore graphic design major from Wichita, served as Student Senate vice president.

Students listed in the official Commencement program on Saturday, May 7 are candidates for the associate of arts degree, the associate degree of applied science, the associate degree of general studies, the associate degree of science, or the college certificate.

The students include summer 2010 graduates, December 2010 graduates, and May 2011 graduates. Students who graduated last summer and last December have received their diplomas. May 2011 graduates will receive their diplomas in June.

The Sid Regnier Bookstore at 207 W. Fifth Ave. will be open until 11:30 p.m. Saturday, May 7.
