College purchases former Medical Lodge North facility
With more than 70 students on the dormitory waiting list at Cowley College,
the school approved the purchase of the former Medical Lodge North
building in Arkansas City during Thursday afternoon’s special
meeting of the Board held in the McAtee Dining Center.
The property, located at 2575 Greenway, will house an additional 50 students plus a dorm manager.
“This will be a quick solution to the increased demand for our dorms,” said Board member Lee Gregg, Jr.
Along with the purchase of the building, the Board approved the cost of the remodeling/renovation of the facility. The college felt good about its investment as the cost was only $43 per square foot.
“The cost per square foot is very favorable in relation to new construction,” Gregg, Jr. said.
Also during Thursday’s meeting, the Board approved the construction of a new elevator, which will be installed inside Galle-Johnson, located on Cowley’s main campus in Arkansas City.
The school has been in need of a larger elevator and will use money it received through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to cover the cost. Along with the construction of the new elevator, the college will also upgrade its fire alarm panels and finish the flooring in the upstairs hallway inside Galle-Johnson. The cost of the work, which will be done by Conco Construction, will come in under the amount of money the college received through the ARRA.
Work will begin soon on both projects. Renovation work on the former Medical Lodge North facility is slated to be completed by Aug. 15, while the construction work inside Galle-Johnson is scheduled to be finished by the middle of September.
