Students gain insight during Smoking Forum

Matt FoxMatt Fox, a freshman Secondary Education major from Rock, Kansas was the big winner at the Smoking Forum raffle held on December 1.  Fox won a $100 Cowley Bookstore gift card and is pictured with his “winnings”.

All participants were eligible for the drawing.  Over 40 students attended the event, where a presentation was given about the dangers of second hand smoke. Students were then encouraged to share their views on the idea of a tobacco free campus.

Several students presented their opinions from both sides of the issue.  Debate was spirited but respectful and information gathered will be used in a formal policy presentation to the Student Senate in the spring.

The event was hosted by the Cowley Activity Awareness Team (CAAT) and the Peers Advocating Wellness for Students (PAWS) club.  All participants received a free t-shirt for attending (compliments of the Clean Air Coalition) and several other door prizes were given away.

Students should keep an eye out for future health forums hosted by the CAAT/PAWS teams next semester. Students interested in joining the PAWS club should contact Sue Saia at 620-441-5274.
