Record number of students take part in seventh annual Fine Arts Day

 

Fine Arts DayHosting the seventh annual Fine Arts Day on Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City on Wednesday, a record number of students took part in the event. All totaled, 174 students and parents were on hand for the day’s festivities.

“The day went exceptional,” Cowley College director of admissions Lory West said. “It has been exciting to watch the day grow each year and to see so many students interested in Cowley’s Fine Arts. The Fine Arts programs did a wonderful job of showcasing the outstanding talent we have here at the college.”

West praised the work done by Cowley employees Marlys Cervantes, Adam Borth, Connie Donatelli, Josh Fleig, Mike Fell, Mark Flickinger, Sunni Goentzel, Scott MacLaughlin, Jamison Rhoads, Meg Smith, Kris Ripley, Diana Dicken, Janet Kennedy, Bryan McChesney, Terri Hutchinson, and Krystle McCorgary as well as the fine arts students who performed throughout the day, student ambassadors, the college’s facilities and maintenance crews and Robert Rogers and Great Western Dining.

“It takes everyone’s hard work and ability to work together to make Fine Arts day a success,” West said.

Through the course of Fine Arts Day, students from Kansas and Oklahoma high schools had a chance to audition and/or share portfolios of their artwork. Student artwork was displayed and prizes were given in several different categories. Prizes awarded included scholarships and cash prizes.

Students also had the opportunity to see Cowley’s different art programs in action, as there were performances by Cowley’s Jazz Band, the Cowley College Singers, and the cast of the upcoming spring musical “The Drowsy Chaperone”. There were also presentations in Creative Writing, communications, journalism, graphic design, and a film made by the art department and Kris Ripley. Students also had a chance to meet with faculty and talk with current students.

Auditions were held for broadcasting, journalism, dance, vocal music, instrumental music, creative writing and theatre scholarships. While, Graphic Design and Prodigy Art Portfolio interviews were conducted.

An awards ceremony and an optional tour of the campus capped the day.
