Banner year continues for Charles Ross with crowning as 2012 Mr. Cinderfella

RossComing to Arkansas City from near Philadelphia, PA, Cowley College student Charles Ross wondered what he had got himself into when he first arrived at the school in 2010. Now, nearly two years later, he can’t picture himself anywhere else after being crowned Mr. Cinderfella 2012 Thursday evening in the Robert Brown Theatre.

Cowley instructor Dejon Ewing talked Ross, who was also the winner of the beachwear category, into taking part in Mr. Cinderfella.

“I was skeptical at first, I didn’t know if I had the guts to perform on stage in front of people,” Ross said.

You would have never guessed it by the way Ross entertained the crowd throughout the evening, including his good-natured flirting with Miss Kansas, Carissa Kelley, who is a 2007 graduate of Cowley College.

“This has been a great experience and to win was just icing on the cake,” Ross said. “I will never forget this.”

Along with his memorable evening on the stage, Ross has had quite a year as a member of the Tiger men’s track and field team. The sophomore became Cowley’s first-ever national champion in the 600-meter run at the NJCAA National Indoor Championships in March, and broke a pair of school records during the indoor season.

“To win nationals and be presented an opportunity to do this (Mr. Cinderfella) is incredible,” Ross said. “I have had some very memorable moments at the school.”

Miss Kansas, Carissa Kelley, led the contestants through the evening. Judges for the event were, Jodie Keefe, Wanda Schwintz, and Peg Williams.

Kelley was glad to make it back to her alma mater and serve as the emcee for the event.

“It was great to be back at the college and be able to share my good fortune,” Kelley said. “I have looked forward to this since being crowned Miss Kansas.”

Jordan Hill, who was the talent winner, finished as the second runner-up. While, Jaden Chappell was the first runner-up. Gavin Brown was the third runner-up and Jason Williams was named fourth runner-up.

The money raised from the event goes towards fund-raisers for Cowley College’s Act One Drama Club and funds for next year’s Mr. CinderFella Pageant. Jason Dewey, who won last year’s Mr. CinderFella title was on hand for the event.
