Cowley College to hold Commencement on May 5


A total of 627 students will be candidates for graduation Saturday, May 5 when Cowley College holds its 89th Commencement exercises.

The Commencement exercises will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 5 inside W.S. Scott Auditorium. A reception for graduates, family members and friends will be held immediately following the ceremony in the Earle N. Wright Community Room inside the Brown Center.

Two hundred and eighty one of the students are expected to participate in the Commencement ceremony. Along with the conferring of degrees, college alumnus Dr. Ruth David will be presented with this year’s Outstanding Tiger Alumnus Award. Dr. David is a 1973 graduate of Cowley College.

The featured speaker is Dr. Andy Tompkins, who is the President and CEO of the Kansas Board of Regents. Members of Cowley’s faculty also will be recognized, including Lois Sampson, who was presented the 2011 Paul Stirnaman Award, and Amy McWhirt, the college’s Endowed Chair for Teaching Excellence and Student Learning.

Director of Communications Adam Borth, Lead MICT instructor Deryk Ruddle, and Natural Science Department instructor Scott Layton will also be recognized and will be honored in late May as Excellence Award recipients at the National Institute for Staff and Organizational Development in Austin, Texas.

Members of Cowley’s Student Senate will address the class. Katelyn Edwards, a sophomore business administration major from Wellington, served as Student Senate president during the 2011-2012 academic year. While, Charley Garrison, a sophomore computer information science major from Foraker, OK, served as Student Senate vice president.

Students listed in the official Commencement program on Saturday, May 5 are candidates for the associate of arts degree, the associate degree of applied science, the associate degree of general studies, the associate degree of science, or the college certificate.

The students include summer 2011 graduates through summer 2012 graduates.  Students who graduated last summer and last December have received their diplomas. May 2012 graduates will receive their diplomas in June.

The Sid Regnier Bookstore at 207 W. Fifth Ave. will be open 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 5.
