AEC team ends with seventh place finish at state competition
Cowley College’s Academic Excellence Challenge (AEC) team competed at the State Academic Excellence Challenge competition Friday and Saturday at K-State Salina. Eleven community colleges competed at the event.
Cowley’s team was comprised of Dylan Bristor, Cathleen Call, Patrick Curl, Brian Lowe, and Morgan Wilson. Curl served as the team captain. Four rounds of competition were played on Friday afternoon. K-State Salina hosted dinner and karaoke night for the students following the first day of competition.
Six rounds of competition were held on Saturday. Cowley’s team won four matches out of 10, ending up in seventh place out of the 11 teams.
Frank Arnold and Beverly Grunder, co-sponsors of AEC, accompanied the team to Salina.
“The team competed well at State. They lost a couple of very close rounds which would have helped to move them up in the rankings,” Grunder said. “The team has practiced twice weekly since last December and they made a lot of improvement over the semester. They were a great group to work with. We will miss our sophomore players of Patrick, Brian and Morgan next year.”
The 11 teams attending were: Allen County Community College, Cloud County Community College, Coffeyville Community College, Colby Community College, Cowley College, Dodge City Community College, Garden City Community College, Hutchinson Community College, Johnson County Community College, Kansas City Kansas Community College, and Neosho County Community College.
