Cowley College winds up top fundraising team at Relay for Life event
With Cowley College’s Relay for Life team being the top fundraising group at the 2012 Relay for Life event held Friday and Saturday at Wilson Park in Arkansas City, $33,243 was raised toward research for a cure for cancer. Of that amount, Cowley College raised a total of $4,858.
There were 288 participants on 14 teams in this year's event. The event began with a cancer survivors lap, celebrating those who have survived cancer or who are currently battling cancer.
Relay for Life is a fun-filled event that mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors — anyone who ever has been diagnosed with cancer — remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer.
Jody Arnett served as team captain for the Cowley College Relay For Life team and the corporate sponsor Chair.
“Special thanks to Cowley College president Dr. (Patrick J.) McAtee and the Cowley administration for being corporate sponsors and supportive of our fundraising efforts,” Arnett said. “Also thanks to all the Cowley team members.”
Along with Arnett, Cowley Relay for Life team members were: Heather Allen, Hannah Andrews, Donna Avery, Nancy Ayers, Pam Crain, Janet Davidson, Marvis Gaddie, Gary Hale, Rikki Hettenbach, Lynne Jordan, Ellen Kelly, Rhoda MacLaughlin, Bryan McChesney, Donni McClaflin, Tom McClaflin, Jamie McGee, Margaret Neal, Krystle Nies, Shannon O’Toole, Libby Palmer, LaVaughan Scheurich, Mindi Shriver, Matt Stone, Janice Stover, Anthony White, and Peggy Williams.
Cowley’s technical director of theatre, Jamison Rhoads, also helped with the event by painting the backdrop that was used to decorate the team’s “campsite” area.
