Media Club takes part in national conference in New Orleans
With the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), the largest
association of electronic journalists, and the Society of Professional
Journalists (SPJ) joining for the national conference in New Orleans,
LA, Sept. 25-27, Cowley College’s Media Club were among the gathering
of journalists that benefited from attending the conference.
Members of the Media Club took part in breakout sessions and workshops relating to the media today, and heard from speakers such as from CNN, Lara Logan and Soledad O'Brien, and from Nick News, Linda Ellerbee.
Jeff Fager, CBS News Chairman and 60 Minutes Executive Producer, delivered the keynote presentation.
“It was encouraging to hear the speakers talk about their experiences in journalism and get to hear what it is actually like in that line of work,” Wil Austin, Editor-in-Chief of the Cowley Press Student Newspaper said.
Three students in the Media Club had the opportunity to take a tour of the Times-Picayune daily newspaper and the news room at WWL-TV. While at WWL-TV they were allowed to watch the filming of a live broadcast and spend time in the production room.
In the evenings, Media Club members had a chance to sample the local cuisine and some of the nightlife.
After going to Louisville, KY as a member of the Media Club in 2010, Austin felt this year’s trip was just as beneficial.
“It was really helpful and gave me the drive to work on more fundraisers or sell more ads in the campus newspaper,” Austin said.
Along with the 12 Media Club members at Cowley College, sponsors Meg Smith and Adam Borth also took part in the national conference.
