Audience treated to unique fall play at Cowley College

fall playWith platforms and risers accommodating 150 people on the stage of the Robert Brown Theatre, Cowley College’s fall play “Our Town” was performed Oct. 4-9.

The play by Thornton Wilder was performed with little to no scenery. Cowley College theatre director, Scott MacLaughlin, felt having the audience so close to the action made them act as if they were a member of the cast.

“I thought the venue was unique and fun for our main stage show,” MacLaughlin said. “It gave the students a completely different acting experience and for the audience I felt it really brought them closer and more involved with the show.”

The play, which was set in the fictional community of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, revealed an American family's intimate and habitual personal lives. Scenes from Grover’s Corners history between the years of 1901 and 1913 played out.

Alex Rowe as George Gibbs, Eric Denning as Dr. Gibbs, and Rebecca Munoz as Emily Webb shined in their roles in the play, as did the entire cast.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the work these students have done,” MacLaughlin said. “For about six weeks they worked very hard on their parts and really exceeded my expectations.”

The Friday and Saturday evening performances of the play were sold out.

“I was very pleased with the audience response,” MacLaughlin said. “I was hoping they would like it and several commented that they really enjoyed the format and being that close to the actors.”

Having six performances gave the actors a chance to keep it fresh and gave them a new appreciation for what professional actors have to do.

Towards the end of the play, Emily Webb realizes just how much life should be valued. The ending left many, including MacLaughlin, re-examining their own life.

“This has been one of the most memorable plays I have ever been involved with,” MacLaughlin said. “I love the message of the play and it has really forced me to think about how it has impacted my life.”
