Writing Portfolio Reception showcases students works
Twenty portfolios by writers from students in Cowley College’s Creative Writing and Journal Writing/Storytelling classes were on display Monday in the President’s Dining Room of the McAtee Dining Center.
In addition, three video clips were played during the reception. Ryan Doom’s Screenwriting class wrote the scripts and filming was done by students in Adam Borth’s Communication Practicum class.
There was a mix of faculty, staff, students and community members who came by to view the works. Slade Griffiths, Cowley College vice president of academic affairs, was among those in attendance.
“It was wonderful to read many of the fine literature works produced by our students,” Griffiths said. “On several occasions, I found myself smiling with joy or beginning to tear up because of the stories. These student writers at Cowley are true jewels of our community.”
Marlys Cervantes, Humanities Department Chair and co-sponsor of the Creative Claws writing club, was proud of the work done by the students and is looking forward to the spring semester.
“They are a talented group, and they are a group who support one another in their writing,” Cervantes said. “The Creative Writing program and Creative Claws are more active on campus than they’ve been in the class, and it’s a great atmosphere when working with these students.”
Creative Claws members will meet the first day of classes, January 12, at 2:30 p.m. in the Jungle conference room. Planned activities for the semester include two Writers’ Corners, on February 16 and April 19, and the group’s annual comedy competition on April 5.
