Phi Theta Kappa welcomes new members

Twenty students participated in the 2011-2012 Phi Theta Kappa new member induction ceremony on Sunday, March 4th in the Wright Room of the Brown Center. Over 80 guests shared the special day with their honorees.

Background music was provided by pianist Anne Saxton. Brent Saxton gave the invocation.  Ryan Doom, faculty advisor, welcomed the group and spoke about the benefits of membership in Phi Theta Kappa, especially the scholarship opportunities.

Students were encouraged to get involved in one of the campus groups in Ark City or Mulvane. Hannah Dillard, Alpha Gamma Upsilon chapter president, then introduced the guest speaker for the afternoon, Sydney Ashby. Sydney is the Director of Youth Services at the Ponca City Public Library. She gave some history and background on the evolution of libraries. Even in this age of unlimited multi-media options, the public library still has its place in our communities and even helps communities remain competitive in our society. Chapter officers conducted the induction ceremony where new members came forward and signed the official membership log. Special guests attending were Slade Griffiths, Vice President of Academic Affairs and Melinda Neal, Natural Science Department instructor. A group picture was taken and attendees enjoyed a cake and punch reception.

Quote from Nancy Ayers, faculty advisor at Mulvane. "Over 70 students have accepted the invitation to Phi Theta Kappa this semester and there is still time to join. The deadline is April 27th. Students have the option of accepting membership online or by bringing their paper application and fees to one of the Cowley business offices."
