HandlinWorking 30 hours a week at her job in Winfield and an additional 15 hours per week in Cowley College’s Student Services Offices as a work study, sophomore Lindsay Handlin manages to maintain a 4.0 grade point average while taking 15 hours of classes. Her stellar work in the classroom led to her being named Cowley College’s January Student of the Month.

Handlin, daughter of Lance and Sheila Handlin, is a Business major from Burden, Kansas. She has a sister, Jandi 21, and two brothers, Levi 16, and Dustin 13. Grandparents are, Gerald and Jackie Grow of Atlanta, KS.

While at Central-Burden High School she participated in volleyball, basketball, softball, cheerleading, FCA, Work Ethics and FCCLA.

She has remained active at Cowley and along with being a work-study; she is involved in Phi Theta Kappa. She also helped with the Numana Food Packaging event during the fall semester and was recognized as a “Caught Ya” doing something well recipient for customer service during the Spring 2012 semester.

She has been on the President’s Honor Roll every semester at Cowley and is a recipient of both a Trustee and Endowment scholarship. She chose to join her sister, Jandi, at Cowley as the sisters each plan to graduate from the school in May.

“I love Cowley and the small class sizes,” Handlin said. “I like being a work study at the school and it is one of the reasons I don’t want to leave.”

Heather Allen, Director of Enrollment Management, is proud of the work Handlin has done in the Student Services Office and in the classroom.

“We noticed right away that Lindsay has a great work ethic in both her studies and with her work in Student Services,” Allen said. “She is excellent at helping other students with whatever it is they may need and handles difficult situations with ease.”

Away from Cowley, Handlin has worked at Family Video in Winfield since September 2011 and is the store’s assistant manager.

Being named Student of the Month is something Handlin does not take lightly.

“I was super happy when I was told I was named Student of the Month,” Handlin said. “It is nice to be recognized.”

After graduating from Cowley, Handlin plans on transferring to Wichita State University where she will work toward her Bachelor’s Degree in Business. After receiving her degree she hopes to work her way up to a vice president position in a major company.
