McDowell named April Student of the Month

Jessica McDowellWith her time at Cowley College winding down, sophomore Jessica McDowell will leave as the school’s final recipient of the Student of the Month award during the 2012-2013 academic year. McDowell, a elementary education major from Mulvane, was recently named the school’s April Student of the Month.

“Everyday I would walk past the window with the pictures of the students of the month in it and knew I wanted to be pictured there,” McDowell said. “To be one of only eight students to be named Student of the Month is a huge honor for me.”

McDowell is the daughter of Carrie McDowell. She has a brother, Tyler 18, and sister, Mercedes 11.

She had planned to attend Emporia State University after graduating from Mulvane High School in 2011. However, she decided to attend Cowley after receiving a scholarship.

“It was close to home and seemed like a small, community oriented school,” McDowell said.

At Cowley, McDowell maintains a 3.82 GPA and has been on the President’s or Dean’s Honor Roll every semester. She is the secretary for FCA, a Resident Assistant for Central Avenue Dormitory, and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Also at the school she is a Student Ambassador, and was awarded the Ambassador of the month for September 2012.

“I am really shy, so to be involved in these activities helps me to get to meet a lot of people,” McDowell said.

In the community she is currently doing volunteer work with first grade students at Francis Willard Elementary in Arkansas City.

Lory West, director of admissions, is one person who has noticed McDowell’s accomplishments at Cowley.

“Jessica works in the Admissions Office as a Student Ambassador and work study,” West said. “She is always willing to help and is very responsible and reliable. She serves as a role model for her peers by being involved on campus and being an outstanding student in the classroom.”

McDowell credits her mother as being the most influential person in her life.

“I appreciate how she has demonstrated the important things in life such as working hard, being responsible, loving myself and others, and leading me to Christ,” McDowell said. “My mom is my best friend.”

In her free time she enjoys exercising, attending Bible Study, and spending time with her family and boyfriend, Patrick Curl, who was Cowley College’s March 2012 Student of the Month.

After Cowley, McDowell plans to transfer to Emporia State University and major in Elementary Education.

“Cowley helped me figure out what I am supposed to do with my life,” McDowell said. “I love being around kids, they bring me so much joy. To help them out would be really rewarding.”
