Cowley College anthropology major Derl Hicks is the first recipient of the Cowley Student Anthropologist of the Year award. This award recognizes outstanding scholarship and leadership by a student in the anthropology program.

“Derl has been a great role model to all students in the program, and an excellent student all around,” said Chris Mayer, head of the Cowley College anthropology program.

Mayer presented Hicks with the award during the program’s Kansas Archaeology Day event on Saturday, April 13.

Originally from Missouri, Hicks is a husband, father and ordained minister. Last fall, he completed an independent research project on the application of anthropological methods to missionary work. This semester, Hicks has been working with other students researching and cataloging the program’s collection of archaeological materials and other artifacts.

Hicks is also the Social Science Department Student of the Year, which he received at Tuesday’s Honors & Awards Ceremony.
