Developing friendships and relationships they hope will help throughout the upcoming school year, 20 youngsters are taking part in the ninth annual Cowley College Summer Theatre Camp held July 10-11 inside the Brown Center.

The two-day camp consists of team building exercises, games, challenges and initiatives for the school’s Theatre Scholarship recipients.

Along with the team building exercises and workshop activities, the group will also attend Music Theatre of Wichita’s production of “The King and I” on Wednesday night.

The annual Summer Theatre Camp began in 2005 as a way for the students to bond prior to the start of the school year.

“It is incredibly important for our students to be friends and to be able to work together,” Cowley technical director of theatre Jamison Rhoads said. “Starting the process early with this camp helps build that camaraderie.”

The students were informed they will be performing “Cactus Flower” for its fall play on Oct. 10-12. A Children’s Theatre production called “Beeple” will take place Nov. 20-21.

Theatre director Dejon Ewing joined Rhoads in working the camp, while Cowley employees Ben Schears and Kristi Shaw accompanied Cowley work study, and alum, Anne Harmon, in assisting with the camp.

Students at the camp are: Mariah Brooks, Lauren Gardner, Kasara Hays, Rose Hooley, Victoria Hutchison, Robin McGonigal, Alexie Pearce, Cody McCall, Addam Porter, Ken Stark, Tanner Wilson, Sydney Borror, Holly Landis, Malaree Hood, Kali Nighswonger, Samantha Vawter, Brauntez Fair, Alex Geurin, Garrett Wolf, and Caroline Fulbright.
