Students receive Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support certification

Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support certification

A total of 36 paramedic students took part in the Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) certification program held Thursday at Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City and Friday at the school’s Allied Health Center in Winfield.

The majority of the participants are students in Cowley College’s paramedic programs, which are held in Winfield and Andover. The certification was conducted by Cowley College instructors Chris Cannon, Steve Storm, and Malachi Winters.

“This was a wonderful opportunity to have both paramedic programs interact with each other and build a sense of cohesion,” Winters said.

The purpose of the PHTLS certification course is to provide students with the knowledge, psychomotor ability and attitudes necessary to manage traumatized patients in the pre-hospital setting. Students will be able to respond to these emergencies, with an emphasis on rapid assessment and recognition, airway management, fluid resuscitation and pharmacological intervention.
