Cowley College to host wrestling dual between OU and Wyoming

wrestlingInducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2009, Jim Ramirez has served as the Coordinator of Officials for both the Big-10 and Big-12 Conferences. His affiliation with NCAA Division I wrestling and the Cowley College Board of Trustees, led to the scheduling of a wrestling dual between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Wyoming to be held Friday, December 7 at 7 p.m. inside Cowley College’s W.S. Scott Auditorium.

Tickets will go on sale Wednesday and are $10 for adults and $4 for children 12 and under. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Cowley Box Office at 620-441-5570.

Mark Branch, who was a wrestling standout at Newkirk (OK) High School and then Oklahoma State University, is the head coach at the University of Wyoming. While, the University of Oklahoma has three Kansas kids on its roster.

With the state of Kansas not having a Division I wrestling program to cheer for, this will provide spectators a tremendous opportunity to see Division I wrestling talent.

Scott MacLaughlin, president of the Ark City Takedown Club, is preparing to host the Battle of the Border Tournament at Arkansas City High School on Dec. 8. More than 700 wrestlers age 5-14 are expected to participate in the tournament, while a novice tournament will be held on Dec. 9.

“The thought is that we’ll have lots of wrestlers and their families from all over Kansas and Oklahoma come in to watch the dual and then participate in our tournament the next day,” MacLaughlin said. “It should be great for all of Ark City.”
