Cowley College art students participated in the 38th annual Art in the Park that was held Saturday, October 6, at Island Park in Winfield, KS.

Displaying their work and visiting with patrons interested in their projects was a new experience for some of the Cowley students. Some were amazed that people kept coming back to the Cowley booths to talk to the artists after viewing all of the other professional artists who had work on display.

Cowley College art instructors Mike Fell and Mark Flickinger were proud of their students. In addition to representing themselves well through their artwork, they pitched in and helped the Winfield Arts and Humanities Council by volunteering their time to help with various duties and activities needed to make Art in the Park run smoothly.

The judge was quite impressed with the quality of the students work. Henry Englemeyer received a purchase award for one of his small pots for $100 and a third place overall award for one of his large pots. Several students sold work in both the two dimensional and three dimensional categories. In addition to Englemeyer, Kristen Phipps, John Laffitte, Desiree Harrison and Kiefer Waltman sold pieces. The total sales were $620.

Fell offered a Raku pottery activity where people could purchase a hand thrown pot, glaze it as they choose and have it Raku fired on the spot. Due to the chill in the air, Fell observed, “My Raku kilns seemed to be an attraction as much for their heat as for the pots being fired in them.”
