Jazz Band and CC Singers to share the stage for fall concert

Teaming to create a seamless vocal and instrumental experience, the Cowley College Jazz Band and CC Singers will share the stage during the fall concert Thursday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. inside the Robert Brown Theatre.

“I am very delighted to share the stage with Connie Donatelli and the CC Singers,” Jazz Band director Josh Fleig said. “We have shared concerts in the past, but this performance will be special.”

This semester the Jazz Band has focused intently on learning the art of jazz improvisation.

“Improvisation is the very spirit of jazz music, and it takes an enormous amount of time and dedication to learn how to perform in this way,” Fleig said. “I am very proud of how these students are embracing this life-long musical challenge. They really sound great and the work they’ve done will definitely show next week.”

With 11 returning students and five new students in the CC Singers, the group is moving in a new direction this year as they have teamed with the Jazz Band to become a true vocal jazz group.

“Our annual Fall Retreat really helped us get off to a great start and the students have been working diligently every rehearsal in preparation for this concert,” Donatelli said.

The program will consist of Basie Eyes by Shorty Rogers (Jazz Band), Blues for Kapp by Marty Paich (Jazz Band), Doin’ It A Cappella by Kirby Shaw (CC Singers), Prime Time Blues by The Real Group (CC Singers), Spring Ain’t Here by Pat Metheny (Jazz Band), You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To by Cole Porter (CC Singers), Hobo Flats by Oliver Nelson (Jazz Band), September Swing by Bob Curnow (Jazz Band), James Bond Theme (CC Singers), The Nearness of You by Hoagy Carmichael (CC Singers), I Wish by Stevie Wonder (CC Singers), and Pick Up the Pieces by The Average White Band (Jazz Band).

Sharing the stage is the same approach the Jazz Band and CC Singers took at last year’s spring concert and the response from the audience was overwhelming.

“The collaboration between the two groups has been so rewarding and instructive for our students. Connie and I are so happy to be working together,” Fleig said.

Members of the Jazz Band are, Jake Loftus, William Bucher, Alyssa Eli, Blake Gillihan, Mollie Talbert, Lara Schmidt, Alex Smitely, Tyler Beach, Ella Riddle, Jaci Hall, Sarah Enderud, Josh Waldorf, Amy Jo Gragert, Nathan Metzinger, Matt Allen, KC Udarbe, Cameron Crabtree, Justin Davis, Cody Waggoner, and Jordan Butler.

The CC singers are, Rebekah Anliker, Dylan Berry, Jordan Butler, Anthony Caldera, Joseph Descartes, Devin Dice, Megan Hamlett, Sidney Hogan, Libby Hooley, Rachel McAfee, Alex Myers, Marissa Spainhower, Ben Stranghoner, Kyle White, Kristan Wiedeman, and Jason Williams.
