Jazz Band and CC Singers team to make beautiful music
Demonstrating the spirit of unity that Jazz Band director Josh Fleig
and CC Singers director Connie Donatelli have created within the Cowley
College music department, the two groups collaborated for the fall
concert Thursday night in the Robert Brown Theatre.
Playing in front of a large crowd, the groups gave a performance to remember.
“Last night’s performance was spectacular,” Fleig said. “The
flow created between the two groups was seamless and utterly exciting. I couldn’t
be more proud of how the Jazz Band and CC Singers sounded.”
The program consisted of Basie Eyes by Shorty Rogers (Jazz Band), Blues
for Kapp by Marty Paich (Jazz Band), Doin’ It A Cappella by Kirby
Shaw (CC Singers), Prime Time Blues by The Real Group (CC Singers), Spring
Ain’t Here by Pat Metheny (Jazz Band), You’d Be So Nice To
Come Home To by Cole Porter (CC Singers), Hobo Flats by Oliver Nelson
(Jazz Band), September Swing by Bob Curnow (Jazz Band), James Bond Theme
(CC Singers), The Nearness of You by Hoagy Carmichael (CC Singers), I
Wish by Stevie Wonder (CC Singers), and Pick Up the Pieces by The Average
White Band (Jazz Band).
Nearly every member of the band improvised at least one solo, and the
ensemble playing was tight and together.
Sharing the stage is the same approach the Jazz Band and CC Singers took
at last year’s spring concert and the response from the audience
was once again overwhelming.
“It was an amazing evening and both Josh and I are so proud of the accomplishments
of our music students and joining together last night was incredible,” Donatelli
said. “We are looking forward to collaborating again next semester.”
The groups plan to continue this momentum into next semester and work
hard all the way to the Jazz festival in Greeley, CO in April.
“What a thrill it is to teach music at Cowley,” Fleig said.
