AEC teams compete at Two-Year Sectional Championship

Cowley College recently had two Academic Excellence Challenge (AEC) teams compete at the Two-Year Sectional Championship held at Cloud County Community College in Concordia on Jan. 25.

Seven community colleges made up the 12 teams at the championship. Cowley, Coffeyville and Cloud each had two teams compete, while Johnson County had three. Garden City, Dodge City, and Allen Community College made up the other teams at the competition.

The Cowley “A” team, made up of Mason Warren, Ron Slaton, John Rohr, and Gracie May came in seventh place, while the Cowley “B” team, comprised of Anthony Maldonado, Chris Cardone, Aniya McGowan, and Wendy Brigido placed fourth.

The Johnson County “A” and “B” teams placed first and second, and Allen came in third.

Cowley has two students who continue to rank in the top-four highest individual standings as Anthony Maldonado placed third and Mason Warren came in fourth. James Jordan and Mariah Irvin were unable to attend the competition due to illness.

In the AEC teams next tournament on Saturday, Feb. 22 at Allen Community College, Maldonado and Warren will compete on the same team whereas they were not able to do so at Concordia. Chris Cardone (11th place) and Ron Slaton (21st place) will join Maldonado and Warren as a team.

“I hope this change will help us beat Johnson County and Allen,” AEC sponsor Dianne Flickinger said.
