ACES program serves at The Lords Diner

ACESMembers of Cowley College Academic Civic Engagement Through Service (ACES) program served individuals at The Lord’s Diner in Wichita on Wednesday, February 19.

The Lord’s Diner, a ministry of the Catholic Diocese of Wichita, provides dinner nightly from 5:30-7:30 p.m., seven days a week, 365 days a year. The mission is achieved in a spirit of compassion and respect through cooperative efforts with people of all faiths, businesses and organizations in the community by gifts of time, talent and treasure.

The Lord’s Diner has two locations in Wichita, with students in the ACES program serving at the downtown location of 520 North Broadway, which serves 425 meals a night . The second location at South Hillside serves 150 meals a night, 30% of which are to families.

The Lord’s Diner has a paid staff but relies on 5,500 volunteers a year to complete this endeavor.

“The students encounter an eye opening experience of what it is like to live on the streets and not know where your next meal will come from,” ACES sponsor James Fry said.

ACES will make a return trip to The Lord’s Diner on Wednesday, March 19.

A food handlers card is required to serve.
