Concert, Sophomore Art and Design Show to be held Thursday

concertThe Cowley College Jazz Band and CC Singers will perform its spring concert Thursday at 7 p.m. inside the Robert Brown Theatre. Prior to the concert, a Sophomore Art and Design Show Reception will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the Earle N. Wright Community Room. There is no cost to attend these events.

The Jazz Band will begin Thursday evening’s performance with two arrangements they played at its fall concert, and from there it will be all new material.

“This semester we have worked really hard on developing a swing concept and I am very proud of the progress the students have made,” Jazz Band instructor Josh Fleig said. “We gained a lot of good insight and a fresh perspective when we participated in the Friends University Jazz Festival back in February. We’ve tried to take what we learned from that experience and pour it into the music we are studying this year.”

The charts the Jazz Band will play are: “The Last Lap” by Bret Zvacek, “Alegria Latina” by Jerry Nowak, “Just Chattin’” by Lars Halle, “Bill’s Thrills” by Lars Halle, “Come Rain or Come Shine” by Harold Arlen, and “J.B.” by Jeff Jarvis.

The CC Singers will then perform “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me”, a Duke Ellington chart arranged by Steve Zegree, “Waiting on the World to Change”, a John Mayer chart arranged by Deke Sharon and featuring Brenna Beeson and Corey Rothwell, “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”, a “Tears For Fears” chart arranged by Kerry Marsh and featuring Cyruss Tasker, “Smile”, a song written by Charlie Chaplin and arranged by Steve Zegree, “Aha!”, a song written by Imogen Heap and sung by the A Cappella group “Pentatonix”. The song “Aha!” will feature Marissa Spainhower.

“We are very excited to share some great jazz music with Arkansas City before we head for the UNC/Greeley Colorado Jazz Festival next week,” vocal music director Connie Donatelli said.

Prior to the concert, individuals can stop by the Wright Room to view work done by the college’s sophomore art and design majors.

Sophomore art majors, Shayla Ake, Kristen Phipps, Seth Roeder, Emily Loy, Kara Thomas, Brianne Moore, and Sarah Von Hoene will have work on display. The work will range from sculptures, wheel thrown pottery, textiles, drawings and paintings.

Cowley art instructor Mark Flickinger believes this will be one of the best sophomore art shows the school has ever had. Fellow art instructor, Mike Fell, echoed those sentiments.

“The students stepped up and took the lead,” Fell said.

An open group critique of the work on display will take place Tuesday, April 22 at 7 p.m. in the Wright Room.

Sophomore graphic design majors, Ken Burrell, Taylor Crow, Katherine Altis, Alexandria Hatheway, Joseph “Bobby” Dean, Ann Edwards, and Will Weeks will also have work on display.

The projects come from classes all of the classes they have taken over their time in the Cowley Graphic Design program, including Introduction to Computer Graphics, Typography, Graphic Design I, and Graphic Design II.
