Concert Band/Concert Choir to perform Tuesday, May 6

With the school year winding down, the Cowley College Concert Choir and Concert Band will conduct their spring concerts at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 6 inside the Robert Brown Theatre.

The Concert Band, under the direction of Josh Fleig, will perform “Beyond the Horizon” by Rosano Galante, “Pageant” by Vincent Persichetti, “Daydream” by Timothy Marr, and “Elements” by Brian Balmages.

“The program for this concert is unlike any that I have presented since my tenure as band director began in 2006,” Fleig said. “The opening piece, Beyond the Horizon, is based upon a recurring theme that is cycled through a variety of key centers and features lush textures throughout. It is an inspirational, almost heroic way of opening the concert. From there we move to three truly unique pieces, each with a modern, contemporary sound. Pageant, by Vincent Persichetti, is a staple of the wind band literature and is a piece that I conducted with the band my first year as director here. When I listen to the band play it now, I am amazed at how far the program has come in the past eight years. The next piece, Daydream, implements innovative tone colors and harmonies in order to portray the sensation one has when drifting into a state of sleep during the middle of the day. Our last piece, Elements, is a musical representation of the four elements associated with early human though, Air, Water, Earth and Fire.”

The Concert Choir will then take the stage to perform under the direction of Connie Donatelli. Among the songs to be performed by the Concert Choir are, “Peze Kafe”, “Rejoice and Sing Out His Praises”, “Letter From a Girl to The World”, “Boyo Balu”, “Waitin’ For The Light to Shine”, “Children Will Listen”, “Seeds Grow to Plants”, “Prayer of the Children”, and “It Takes a Village”.

There is no cost to attend this incredible evening of music.

“This has been an amazing year in the instrumental music department,” Fleig said. “I personally have grown tremendously as a musician and director as a result of working with these great students. I look forward to presenting this music on Tuesday evening.”
