Long-time employees take administrative positions at Cowley College


Jason O’Toole (Class of 1994) and Josh Cobble (Class of 2003), two long-time employees of Cowley College, were recently hired to fill administrative positions at the school.

O’Toole, who played baseball at Cowley during the 1993 and 1994 seasons and has been employed at the school for the past 17 years, was chosen to be the Executive Director of Student Affairs. While, Cobble, who was a member of the Tiger tennis team in 2002 and 2003 and has spent the past seven years as the head men and women’s tennis coach at Cowley, will take over the role of Executive Director of Enrollment Management.

O’Toole had previously served as the Director of the IMPACT/Student Support Services TRIO program since 2006. He will oversee housing, health services, counseling, student life, and the TRIO programs.

Cobble will oversee admissions, advising, student services, financial aid, and disability services.

“I look forward to serving with each in these new roles as they continue in their long service to Cowley and our students,” Cowley College interim president Tony Crouch said.

Ben Schears, vice president for institutional advancement, and admissions director Helen Nakos had filled the roles of Executive Director of Student Affairs and Executive Director of Enrollment Management on an interim basis.

Crouch praised the work done by both Schears and Nakos as the school looked to fill the positions.
After graduating from Cowley, O’Toole received a Bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Family Studies from Kansas State University in 1997 and a Master’s degree from Wichita State University in Curriculum and Instruction in 2002.

O’Toole’s wife, Shannon, is the director of bookstore operations at Cowley College, and has also spent the past 17 years employed at the school.

During his time at the school, Jason has had an opportunity to work for two long-time employees of Cowley College in Maggie Picking and Sue Saia, who spent a combined two plus decades as the school’s vice presidents of student affairs.

“I had great mentors ahead of me the last 17 years, so I hope to grab the torch and do a good job of mentoring and leading the current team we have in place,” O’Toole said. “Ever since I graduated from college and came back to work at Cowley it has been a goal of mine to one day lead the student affairs department at Cowley. I am excited about the possibility to continue to make a difference at the school and the Ark City community.”

After graduating from Cowley, Cobble went on to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Cameron University in 2005. He is currently working on his Master’s degree in Liberal Studies through Fort Hays State University.

Cobble has had great success as the tennis coach at Cowley as he led the Tiger men and women’s tennis teams to their highest NJCAA Division I finishes in the history of the programs during the 2014 season.

With Cobble at the helm, the Tiger men and women’s tennis teams captured region titles during the 2011, 2012, and 2014 seasons. The Tiger men made it four straight region titles during the 2014 season, while the Lady Tigers won their fifth region title in the past six seasons.

Cobble was named the Wilson/ITA Men’s National Tennis Coach of the Year in 2012 and Wilson/ITA Women’s National Tennis Coach of the Year in 2011. He has also served as the President of the NJCAA Men’s Tennis Coaches Association, was an ITA National Men’s Tennis Ranking Chair, and a National Men and Women’s Tennis Awards Chair.

Along with his coaching duties, Cobble served as a member of the college’s marketing committee, social media committee, and was an adjunct instructor and academic advisor at the school. He is looking forward to making the transition from coach to administrator.

“I have immersed myself in Cowley, it is a place I believe in,” Cobble said. “I am excited to be a part of keeping the college moving forward. We have an excellent group in place and I look forward to helping make the college an even better place for the students than it already is.”
