Students see what Cowley has to offer during Medical Careers Day  

medical careersFor the sixth year in a row, students interested in a medical career had an opportunity to take part in Medical Careers Day at Cowley College. This year’s event was held Wednesday at Cowley College’s main campus in Arkansas City with a total of 58 students taking part in the day’s activities.

Participants were from Winfield, Arkansas City, Wellington, Bluestem, Newton, Derby, Burden, and Wichita North High School.

Chris Cannon (Department Chair and Director of EMS Education), Krystle Nies (admissions representative), Deryk Ruddle (lead paramedic instructor), Malachi Winters (lead paramedic instructor), Steve Storm (paramedic instructor), Stefani Jones (coordinator of Allied Health Support Services), Jeff Fluty (athletic trainer), and Paula Phelps (director of online education) were on hand to discuss the programs and degrees offered at Cowley College.

Several other Cowley employees, as well as the school’s Student Ambassadors, helped make the event a success.

The high school students also had an opportunity to visit with representatives from South Central Regional Medical Center, Ark City EMS, Winfield EMS, Butler EMS, Mulvane EMS, Wellington EMS, Sedgwick County EMS, Red Cross, Hospice of Kansas, Pratt/Cowley LPN-RN, coding/transcription professionals, medical lab technicians, and Cowley College paramedic students.

“This is a great way for us to let the students know about the fantastic programs, great faculty, and wonderful facilities we have to offer,” Chris Cannon said. “Krystle (Nies) did a fantastic job helping put this together.”

From medical office support to pre-professional medical programs, Cowley College offers a range of degrees and programs, including:

  • Allied Health programs: Paramedic, EMS-Education, EMT, EMS-Leadership, CCEMTP, Medical Office, Medical Transcription, Medical Coding, CNA/CMA, RN/LPN, Home Health Aide, Long Term Adult Care, Phlebotomy, Health Services Management and Community Development, Pre-Nursing, Medical Lab Technician, Pre-Athletic Training and Leadership.

  • Pre-Professional programs: Chiropractic, Dentistry, Dietetics, Forensics, Medicine, Mortuary Science, Nursing/Dental Hygiene, Pharmacy, Physical Therapy, and Veterinary Medicine.
