Freshman art student garners Merit Award at Art in the Park

JazminTaking part in her first ever Art in the Park event Saturday at Winfield’s Island Park, Cowley College freshman Jazmin Lara was the recipient of a Merit Award for her pencil drawing titled “Morning.”

Lara was one of several Cowley College Art Club students that had their work on display at Art in the Park.

“It was a lot of fun to walk around and see other artists’ work,” Lara said. “Winning the award will give me more confidence in my art.”

Lara’s work ranges from pencil drawing, ink drawing, and color pencil drawings. She is also interested in learning how to paint.

Cowley College art instructor Mike Fell, who had a booth at the event where he demonstrated the Raku firing process, was proud to see Lara recognized as a Merit Award recipient.

“There were a number of really good professional artists showing their work at the park this year,” Fell said. “The competition was tough.”

Lara, who graduated from Arkansas City High School and is majoring in graphic design, credits Fell and the Cowley College Art Department with helping improve her quality of work.

“I find the art classes extremely challenging which is nice,” Lara said. “Making my brain work harder has made my art work a lot better.”

Along with the Merit Award, Lara was also contacted to have her artwork commissioned while at Art in the Park.

“I love the competition and get a huge adrenaline rush competing at events like this,” Lara said.

Along with Art in the Park, Cowley student art is currently on display in the large gallery at Baden Square in Winfield until October 24.

Lara will have eight pieces on display at the gallery.
